What's Happening?
The Idaho State Police (ISP) recently broke ground on a new 20,000-square-foot forensic laboratory at its Headquarters in Meridian. This $29 million facility is scheduled for completion in January 2028 and represents a significant investment in Idaho’s
forensic science capabilities. The new laboratory will house critical services including DNA casework, latent print examination, digital forensics, and the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN). ISP Forensic Services (ISPFS) provides scientific analysis and related services statewide, supporting 114 law enforcement agencies, prosecutors in all 44 counties, 14 public defender offices, and 44 coroners. In Fiscal Year 2026, the laboratory system processed 16,069 case submissions, including 3,745 DNA samples. This project is Phase 1 of a larger planned laboratory expansion, funded through the State of Idaho General Fund.

This will involve installing specialized equipment and ensuring seamless transitions for ongoing casework. The expansion will also free up space in the existing Headquarters laboratory, allowing for increased capacity in chemistry, toxicology, DNA database operations, and alcohol analysis. Future phases of the laboratory expansion, already included in the overall design, will be planned and funded as needed, further enhancing Idaho's forensic infrastructure.
