What's Happening?
Jammu and Kashmir's Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo chaired a meeting to develop a comprehensive strategy for the commercial cultivation of medicinal and aromatic plants (MAPs) in the region. The meeting involved key stakeholders from the Forest and Agriculture
Production Departments, CSIR–Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine, and other institutions. The initiative aims to enhance the economic potential of the MAP sector, which currently generates minimal revenue compared to its potential. The strategy focuses on inter-departmental coordination, farmer training, and market integration to boost the sector's growth.
Why It's Important?
The development of a structured roadmap for MAP cultivation in Jammu and Kashmir is significant for several reasons. It has the potential to transform the region's agricultural landscape by providing farmers with new income opportunities and promoting sustainable agricultural practices. The initiative could also position Jammu and Kashmir as a key player in the global MAP market, which is valued at billions of dollars. By focusing on high-demand species and leveraging scientific research, the region can enhance its economic resilience and contribute to the global supply of medicinal plants.
