What's Happening?
The town of Reading, Massachusetts, has been awarded a $500,000 HousingWorks Infrastructure Program grant. This funding, part of the Fiscal Year 2027 round of the Commonwealth’s Community One Stop for Growth Program, is designated for the redesign of the Walkers
Brook Drive corridor. The project aims to transform the current four-lane roadway into a multimodal corridor, enhancing connectivity and safety for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians. The grant will support the progression of the project, which is currently at 25% design, helping to achieve near construction-ready design documents. This initiative is expected to facilitate future dense mixed-use development and housing within the immediate area. This is not the first time Reading has received such support, as it previously secured a $500,000 MassWorks Infrastructure Grant for Walkers Brook Drive in 2024 through the same program.
Why It's Important?
This grant is crucial for Reading, Massachusetts, as it directly supports infrastructure development that will serve as an economic engine for the community. By investing in the Walkers Brook Drive corridor, the town is laying the groundwork for new housing and economic development, fostering a vibrant mixed-use district. The redesign will improve public safety and promote local businesses, addressing critical needs for urban planning and community growth. The project's focus on multimodal transportation also aligns with modern urban development trends, aiming to create more accessible and sustainable communities. This funding demonstrates the Commonwealth's commitment to supporting local initiatives that enhance infrastructure, housing production, and overall economic vitality, potentially serving as a model for other towns seeking similar development.
What's Next?
The $500,000 HousingWorks grant will be utilized to advance the Walkers Brook Drive corridor redesign project, moving it closer to the construction-ready phase. Town Manager Jayne Wellman emphasized that this investment in infrastructure today will create the foundation for new housing and economic development for generations. House Minority Leader Bradley H. Jones, Jr. (R-North Reading) and State Representative Richard M. Haggerty (D-Woburn) both highlighted that the funding will further advance planned roadway safety improvements and facilitate future housing and mixed-use development. State Senator Jason M. Lewis (D-Winchester) noted that these improvements will energize the neighborhood and make it safer for all users. The next steps will involve detailed design work and planning, with the ultimate goal of transforming the corridor into a more connected and safer area.

The continuous investment in the Walkers Brook Drive project, as evidenced by this latest grant, reflects a broader strategic vision for sustainable urban development in Reading, Massachusetts. Beyond the immediate benefits of improved infrastructure and housing, this initiative could foster a stronger sense of community by creating more walkable and bikeable spaces, encouraging local engagement and reducing reliance on single-occupancy vehicles.
