What's Happening?
Owensboro Public Schools (OPS) has been chosen as one of four districts to participate in the second cohort of the Kentucky Department of Education’s (KDE) Office of Teaching and Learning (OTL) RISE Leadership Academy. This program aims to cultivate a collaborative
network of teacher leaders focused on enhancing science instruction across Kentucky. The selected OPS teachers include Lindsey Alvey (District Math/Science Coordinator), Kathleen Ayer (Foust 2nd Grade), Olivia Owen (Foust 4th Grade), Cassandra Oliver (Owensboro Middle School), and Cary Hicks (Owensboro High School). These educators will engage in ongoing, curriculum-based professional learning to effectively implement three-dimensional, inquiry-based science teaching. The academy leverages high-quality instructional resources and models intellectual preparation to empower participants. The program involves structured in-person and virtual sessions throughout the year, focusing on intellectual preparation, effective science teaching and learning strategies, and formative assessment practices. This initiative builds upon the success of the previous cohort, which demonstrated significant impact in shifting mindsets and improving science education.
