The Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering, specifically its Virtual World Heritage Lab, has been awarded a three-year grant by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). This grant is part of a larger $749,000 project, 'A New Online
Archive for the Study of the American Revolution,' led by Louisville’s Frazier History Museum. The Luddy School's share of the funding is $200,000. The project aims to 3D digitize selected Revolutionary War artifacts, including military weapons and equipment, documents, currency, and everyday household items. This initiative coincides with the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States. Professor Gabriele Guidi, director of the Virtual Heritage Track, emphasized that this project will preserve fragile originals, reduce handling risks, and significantly broaden scholarly and public access to these historical objects and documents. The artifacts are housed at the Frazier History Museum and the Sons of the American Revolution Museum. The Luddy School's Virtual World Heritage Laboratory will be responsible for high-resolution macro-digitization and developing the project portal, while Flyover Zone, an ed-tech company founded by a Luddy professor emeritus, will handle medium- and large-scale 3D captures.

Over the next three years, the consortium, including the Luddy School's Virtual World Heritage Lab, will focus on the 3D digitization of at least 150 high-resolution digital twins and 100 digitized 2D documents. This will involve meticulous work on military weapons, historical naval models like the Turtle submarine, various documents including Continental Currency and correspondence, and everyday artifacts. A web-based 3D viewer will be developed to support metrical measurements directly on the models, alongside enriched, object-level metadata. The project will also expand two public databases owned by consortium members and establish a federated portal hosted by the Virtual World Heritage Laboratory, which Professor Guidi stated will be maintained for at least five years beyond the grant period. The ongoing work will contribute to a more inclusive historical record, particularly by documenting the lives of previously underrepresented groups. The project's progress will likely be shared through academic channels and public platforms, offering new insights into the American Revolution as the nation approaches its 250th anniversary.
