What's Happening?
Gavin Lane, a Norfolk farmer, has been appointed as the 57th president of the Country Land and Business Association (CLA), succeeding Victoria Vyvyan. Lane has outlined his priorities for his two-year
tenure, focusing on campaigning against government inheritance tax changes and securing certainty around agri-environmental schemes. He emphasizes the potential of the rural economy, particularly for young people, and advocates for unlocking the planning system to enhance land stewardship and address issues like housing and flood management. Lane is set to meet with Defra secretary Emma Reynolds and will appear at the CLA’s Rural Business Conference.
Why It's Important?
Lane's presidency comes at a critical time for the rural economy, which faces challenges such as inheritance tax changes and uncertainty in agri-environmental schemes. His focus on long-term family businesses and land management highlights the importance of stability and economic growth in rural areas. By advocating for a comprehensive rural development policy, Lane aims to foster confidence and growth in the sector, which could lead to improved economic outcomes and sustainability. His leadership could influence policy decisions that impact rural communities and the agricultural industry, potentially leading to significant changes in land use and management practices.
