Instructure, the developer of the Canvas learning management system, has announced a partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to create AI-powered tools aimed at broadening access to digital education and workforce training. This initiative, operating
under the AWS Education Equity Initiative, seeks to reach approximately 900,000 learners in its first year, with 280,000 of these individuals coming from underserved communities. The long-term goal is to engage 5.4 million learners over four years, including about 1.8 million from underserved backgrounds. The program will concentrate on two primary areas: developing AI-powered tools to facilitate the migration of educational institutions from older systems to cloud-based platforms, and enhancing Canvas Career, Instructure’s platform for workforce and continuing education. The migration tools are designed to reduce the cost and complexity associated with transitioning from legacy LMS platforms, self-managed open-source systems, and other non-standard platforms to Canvas. Melissa Loble, Instructure Chief Learning Officer, emphasized that education equity involves building systems that cater to learners in all environments, especially those facing significant barriers to opportunity. The initial phase of the program will target institutions in the United States, Brazil, Mexico, and the United Kingdom, with a specific focus on rural and first-generation students, incarcerated learners, community college students, and participants in workforce development programs.
