What's Happening?
The state of Punjab in India has initiated the self-enumeration phase of Census 2027, starting from April 30, 2026, and continuing until May 14, 2026. Residents are encouraged to voluntarily submit their household data online through the official census
website. This marks the first digital phase of the census, focusing on housing and amenities. Following this phase, in-person verification will occur from May 15 to June 13, 2026, to ensure accuracy and completeness of the data collected.
Why It's Important?
The introduction of a digital self-enumeration process represents a significant shift in how census data is collected, potentially increasing efficiency and accuracy. This approach can lead to more comprehensive data collection, which is crucial for planning and resource allocation. The success of this digital initiative could serve as a model for future censuses in other regions, promoting the use of technology in governance and public administration.
