What's Happening?
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine and Lt. Governor Jim Tressel have declared March as Ohio Agriculture Month, recognizing the significant role agriculture plays in the state's economy and community. The Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) is leading the celebration,
highlighting the contributions of the state's 74,000 farms and agribusinesses. Governor DeWine emphasized the importance of agriculture in feeding families and powering the economy, while Lt. Governor Tressel noted the industry's foundational role in Ohio's history. ODA Director Brian Baldridge pointed out Ohio's ideal conditions for producing over 200 crops and livestock, contributing to a $124 billion industry that employs one in eight Ohioans. The state ranks highly in several agricultural products, including Swiss cheese, eggs, and soybeans. Throughout March, Director Baldridge will tour the state to spotlight the diversity and impact of Ohio's agriculture.
Why It's Important?
The declaration of Ohio Agriculture Month underscores the critical importance of agriculture to the state's economy and community well-being. With agriculture being a $124 billion industry in Ohio, it plays a vital role in employment and economic stability. The recognition serves to highlight the contributions of farmers and agribusinesses, encouraging support for local products and raising awareness of the industry's impact. This initiative not only celebrates the state's agricultural achievements but also aims to inspire future generations to engage in agriculture, ensuring the industry's sustainability and growth. By promoting local agriculture, Ohio can enhance food security and economic resilience, benefiting both producers and consumers.
What's Next?
Throughout March, the Ohio Department of Agriculture will conduct a statewide tour to engage with farmers, business leaders, and youth, promoting the importance of agriculture. The ODA has also developed a toolkit to encourage statewide participation, including social media graphics, educational resources, and information on supporting local farmers. Ohioans are encouraged to participate by purchasing Ohio-grown products and learning more about the agricultural industry. This initiative aims to foster a deeper connection between consumers and producers, potentially leading to increased support for local agriculture and a stronger state economy.
