What's Happening?
NATO and Ukrainian forces are adapting their artillery capabilities in response to lessons learned from the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Since Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022, European NATO countries have been acquiring new self-propelled
howitzers and multiple rocket launchers, as well as upgrading existing systems. This modernization effort is complemented by the procurement of reconnaissance and strike unmanned aerial vehicles and loitering munitions. Meanwhile, the Russian Armed Forces continue to rely on Soviet-era artillery systems, while also fielding new and modernized artillery units.
