Researchers have discovered fossils of Urokodia, a shrimp-like creature, at the Chengjiang fossil site in Yunnan Province, China. This ancient organism, which lived over 500 million years ago, is believed to be a precursor to modern arachnids, including
spiders and scorpions. Urokodia had specialized gills for underwater breathing and pincers, which are characteristic of chelicerates. These features suggest that Urokodia played a significant role in the evolutionary transition from aquatic to terrestrial life. The study, led by Professor Liu of Yunnan University, utilized X-ray tomography to reveal the creature's anatomical details, providing a clearer understanding of the evolutionary history of chelicerates.
