What's Happening?
The Petoskey District Library is participating in the 17th Annual Free Tree Program organized by Neighborhood Forest, a nonprofit organization. This initiative aims to distribute free trees to local families as part of Earth Week celebrations. Registration
for the program is open until March 15, and participants can choose to receive a free tree for planting at home, purchase additional trees, or donate to fund community tree planting. The trees, which will be 6-12 inches tall, are expected to arrive around Earth Day, April 22. The program emphasizes providing native and fruit-bearing trees, with specific species to be announced in early April.
Why It's Important?
This initiative is significant as it promotes environmental awareness and community involvement in sustainability efforts. By distributing free trees, the program encourages families to engage in eco-friendly practices and contribute to local biodiversity. The initiative also supports the broader goal of increasing tree cover, which can help mitigate climate change effects by absorbing carbon dioxide. Additionally, the program fosters a sense of community and shared responsibility for the environment, potentially inspiring similar efforts in other regions.
What's Next?
Participants who register will receive detailed instructions on tree pick-up or distribution closer to Earth Day. They will also receive planting instructions and care tips via email. The program's success could lead to increased participation in future years, potentially expanding the types of trees offered and the number of participants. Community feedback and engagement will likely influence the program's development and outreach strategies.
