What's Happening?
The City of Keene Public Works Department has released its schedule for construction and maintenance activities for the week of November 2, 2026. Several key projects are underway across the city, impacting traffic and public access. On Court Street,
All States Construction and L&D Pavement Markings will install pavement markings, reducing traffic to alternating one-way flow. In Central Square, Casella will continue sewer utility construction and perform test pits on Main Street, leading to temporary shifts or closures of parking spaces and sections of the square. Marlboro Street will also see pavement marking installations by Bazin Brothers Trucking and L&D Pavement Markings, resulting in alternating one-way traffic. The George Street Bridge project, handled by New England Infrastructure, Inc., will involve site cleanup and utility installations, with the street remaining closed and traffic detoured for approximately four more weeks before a winter shutdown. Additionally, demolition of the pool deck at Robin Hood Park will continue, and storm drain replacement on River Street and sewer service installation on Kelleher Street will cause temporary traffic alterations.
Why It's Important?
These construction projects are crucial for maintaining and upgrading Keene's infrastructure, addressing essential needs such as road safety, utility services, and public recreational facilities. The pavement marking installations on Court Street and Marlboro Street aim to improve road safety and traffic flow for motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists. The sewer utility work in Central Square is vital for the city's sanitation system, preventing potential public health issues and ensuring efficient waste management. The ongoing work on the George Street Bridge is a significant infrastructure investment, intended to enhance connectivity and structural integrity. While these projects cause temporary disruptions, they are necessary for long-term civic improvement, ensuring that Keene's public spaces and utilities remain functional, safe, and up-to-date for its residents. The coordinated efforts by the Public Works Department and various contractors reflect a commitment to urban development and public welfare.
