Kentwood Public Schools in Michigan is focusing on integrating 'durable skills' into their STEM education programs. These skills, previously known as 'soft skills' or 'employability skills', include leadership, collaboration, communication, and problem-solving.
The initiative is part of a broader effort to prepare students for the workforce by embedding these skills into classroom learning. The program is supported by the Kent ISD STEM consultant, Du Bui, who is working with local districts to implement these skills into core instruction. The approach is designed to help students develop competencies that are essential for navigating life and careers, especially in a rapidly changing job market influenced by technology and automation.

The integration of durable skills into education is crucial as employers increasingly demand these competencies. According to a study by America Succeeds, durable skills are sought after nearly four times more than technical skills in job postings. This demand is particularly high in management, business operations, and engineering jobs. The focus on these skills aims to address the gap identified by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, which reported that a significant percentage of graduates are not prepared for the workforce. By equipping students with these skills, schools like Kentwood are preparing them for future job markets that are being reshaped by artificial intelligence and automation.

Kentwood Public Schools plans to continue embedding durable skills into their curriculum, with a particular focus on STEM and career-connected learning. The district is using the Michigan Career Development Model to guide this integration. Other districts are also being encouraged to adopt similar approaches, with resources and frameworks being developed to support teachers in providing feedback on skill development. The ongoing collaboration between educators and industry experts aims to ensure that students are not only academically prepared but also equipped with the interpersonal and professional skills needed for success in the modern workforce.
