What's Happening?
Lucas Hite, a resident of Gracey, Kentucky, has been selected as one of 22 participants in the Kentucky Agricultural Leadership Program's (KALP) Class 15. The program, housed at the University of Kentucky Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and
Environment, aims to develop leadership skills among individuals involved in agriculture. Hite, who is the youngest male member of the class, was nominated by Nick Woodruff, a past participant and son-in-law of Seven Springs Farms' owner, where Hite worked during high school. The program includes seminars, farm tours, and discussions on various agricultural topics, such as agritourism, which Hite finds particularly intriguing. Participants will engage in activities across Kentucky and beyond, including a planned visit to South America next year.
Why It's Important?
The inclusion of young leaders like Lucas Hite in programs such as KALP is crucial for the future of agriculture in Kentucky and beyond. By focusing on agritourism, the program highlights alternative income streams for farmers, which is vital in an industry facing challenges from market fluctuations and climate change. Agritourism not only provides economic benefits but also fosters community engagement and education about agriculture. Hite's participation underscores the importance of diversifying agricultural practices and preparing the next generation of leaders to address the evolving needs of the industry.
What's Next?
As part of the KALP, Lucas Hite and his fellow participants will continue to engage in educational activities and discussions designed to enhance their understanding of agriculture and leadership. The program's schedule includes visits to various agricultural operations and discussions on leadership and civil discourse. The group's upcoming activities include a visit to Louisville and a trip to South America, which will provide further opportunities for learning and networking. These experiences are expected to equip participants with the skills and knowledge needed to drive innovation and change in the agricultural sector.
