What's Happening?
In 2025, the Vanguard Charitable donor-advised fund distributed $3.9 billion to nearly 67,000 nonprofits, marking the ninth consecutive year of record giving. This represents a 27% increase from 2024, with a significant portion of the grants, nearly $1
billion, being distributed between November 1 and December 31. The top five areas supported by these grants were human services, religion, education, health, and environment and wildlife. Notably, half of the grants were unrestricted, allowing recipient organizations to allocate funds as needed. Rebecca Moffett, president of Vanguard Charitable, highlighted the donors' commitment to philanthropy and their strategic use of donor-advised funds to address evolving needs and maximize impact.
Why It's Important?
The substantial increase in grants from Vanguard Charitable underscores a growing trend in philanthropy where donor-advised funds are becoming a pivotal tool for strategic giving. This trend allows donors to respond flexibly to urgent needs, such as the increased food insecurity during the 2025 government shutdown, where $19 million was granted to food programs. The unrestricted nature of many grants empowers nonprofits to address immediate and critical needs, enhancing their operational effectiveness. This development is significant for the nonprofit sector, as it highlights the potential for donor-advised funds to drive substantial financial support and adaptability in addressing societal challenges.
