The U.S. Army is preparing to field the first batch of a new detection system, the Spectrum Situational Awareness System (S2AS), designed to identify signals emitted by friendly units. This initiative aims to prevent adversaries from exploiting the increasingly
observable electromagnetic spectrum (EMS) to target U.S. forces. The service plans to deliver nine S2AS units to "prioritized Army units" within three weeks, with a total of 46 systems expected to be delivered by July 2027. Developed by 3dB Labs, the S2AS can be carried by two soldiers or mounted on a vehicle or tripod, featuring two nodes and handheld detection capabilities. Its primary function is to measure and reduce the electromagnetic signature of command posts and other high-value targets, identifying "rogue" signals like cell phones or unauthorized radio chatter that could compromise unit positions. This development is a direct response to lessons learned from conflicts like the Ukraine war, where the EMS has become a critical and dangerous domain.
