What's Happening?
The International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) and the Government of Rajasthan have signed four Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) to enhance agricultural productivity and climate resilience in Rajasthan. The agreements
were formalized during the Global Rajasthan Agritech Meet (GRAM) 2026 Investor Meet. The partnership focuses on establishing centers of excellence in millet systems, genomics, regenerative agriculture, and capacity building. These initiatives aim to leverage advanced science and technology to develop high-yielding, stress-tolerant crops and promote sustainable farming practices. The collaboration seeks to empower smallholder farmers by integrating digital tools and market linkages into the agricultural ecosystem.
Why It's Important?
This partnership is crucial for addressing the challenges faced by farmers in Rajasthan, particularly in dryland areas. By focusing on climate-resilient cropping and sustainable practices, the initiative aims to improve food security and reduce poverty among smallholder farmers. The collaboration combines ICRISAT’s expertise in dryland research with the state’s vision for agricultural development, potentially transforming the region’s agricultural landscape. The establishment of centers of excellence is expected to drive innovation and enhance the resilience of the agricultural sector, contributing to the overall economic development of the region.
What's Next?
The partnership will focus on implementing the initiatives outlined in the MoUs, with an emphasis on research, training, and scaling science-led innovations. The success of these initiatives will depend on continued collaboration between ICRISAT and the Rajasthan government, as well as the engagement of local farmers and stakeholders. The long-term goal is to create a sustainable agricultural ecosystem that supports the livelihoods of smallholder farmers and contributes to the state’s economic growth. Monitoring and evaluation will be key to ensuring the effectiveness and impact of the initiatives.
