The University of Melbourne has appointed Michelle Fitzgerald as its new Chief Information Officer (CIO). Fitzgerald, who previously served as the group chief digital officer at St Vincent’s, will be responsible for overseeing the strategic delivery and
governance of enterprise information technology, digital innovation, and cybersecurity across the university. Her appointment follows the departure of Byron Collins, the former CIO, at the end of January. During the interim period, the role was managed by CISO Amit Achrekar and director of enterprise technology Daniel Buttigieg. Fitzgerald expressed enthusiasm about her new role, highlighting the unique challenges and opportunities presented by the current landscape in higher education, which includes navigating policy shifts, resource constraints, and the rise of artificial intelligence.
