A new study published in JAMA Network Open by Kaiser Permanente researchers has identified 'hotspots' with lower-than-expected measles vaccination rates in Northern California, including two areas in Sonoma and Napa counties. Despite the region's strong
overall measles vaccination rate of 97.6% among Kaiser 7-year-olds, the study found seven clusters of U.S. Census tracts where combined measles vaccine coverage was below the 95% threshold needed for herd immunity. These clusters included 242 census tracts with a combined coverage of 94.6%, though some individual tracts had significantly lower rates. The Sonoma County cluster encompasses areas like west Santa Rosa, Sebastopol, Graton, Forestville, and Fulton, while the Napa County cluster is a single tract bordering Sonoma. Dr. Mia Shim, Sonoma County's health officer, noted that these localized gaps in protection are often masked by high vaccination rates in surrounding communities.
