What's Happening?
Teal Health, a virtual women's health company, has announced the nationwide availability of its FDA-authorized at-home cervical cancer screening device, the Teal Wand™, across all 50 states. This initiative
follows the company's FDA authorization in May 2025 and aligns with the American Cancer Society's updated cervical cancer screening guidelines. The Teal Wand™ allows women to collect samples at home for primary HPV testing, which are then mailed for analysis using the same FDA-approved assays as those used in clinics. This service aims to eliminate barriers such as missed appointments and discomfort that have historically led to under-screening, with nearly one in three U.S. women currently behind on their cervical cancer screenings.
Why It's Important?
The expansion of Teal Health's at-home screening service is significant as it addresses the declining participation in cervical cancer screenings in the U.S. By providing a convenient and private option, the initiative could increase screening rates, which are crucial for the prevention of cervical cancer. The service is designed to be accessible, with pricing set at $99 with insurance and $249 without, and efforts are underway to further reduce costs. The initiative also supports health equity by reaching women who face structural barriers in traditional healthcare settings. The potential increase in screening adherence could lead to earlier detection and treatment, ultimately reducing cervical cancer mortality rates.
What's Next?
Teal Health plans to continue expanding its partnerships with health systems, employers, and provider organizations to reach more women, particularly those overdue for screenings. The company is also working to expand insurance coverage and reduce out-of-pocket costs for users. As the service gains traction, it may prompt other healthcare providers to adopt similar at-home testing models, potentially transforming preventive healthcare practices. The success of this initiative could serve as a model for other types of cancer screenings, further integrating telehealth solutions into routine healthcare.
