What's Happening?
A UK consortium, including the UK Battery Industrialisation Centre, Watercycle Technologies, Recyclus Group, and Polaron, has secured government funding to develop ReCAM, a recycling process for lithium-ion battery waste. The project is part of the UK's
£452 million Battery Innovation Programme. ReCAM aims to convert end-of-life lithium-ion battery waste, known as black mass, directly into cathode active material (CAM) within the UK. This process is designed to handle up to 94,000 tonnes of black mass annually by 2040, containing valuable metals like lithium, nickel, cobalt, and manganese. The ReCAM process is notable for its efficiency, converting black mass into CAM in a single step without waste, unlike traditional methods that require multiple chemical stages.

The development of ReCAM is a significant step towards establishing a sustainable and economically viable battery recycling industry in the UK. By processing battery waste domestically, the project aims to reduce emissions associated with exporting waste and enhance the resilience of the UK battery ecosystem.
