State and local governments in the United States are increasingly adopting cloud technologies to enhance modernization, security, and efficiency. This trend is highlighted in the Building Cloud Trust report,
commissioned by Amazon Web Services (AWS) and conducted by Vanson Bourne. The report surveyed 2,800 technology and security decision-makers across 13 countries, including 400 respondents from the U.S., with 19 percent representing state and local governments. These respondents plan to increase public cloud adoption over the next year, utilizing multiple providers and a mix of cloud and on-premises solutions. States like Arizona, Iowa, and Mississippi are leading the charge with cloud-first strategies and centers of excellence, while West Virginia is adopting a 'cloud right' approach, balancing costs, security, performance, and compliance.

The shift towards cloud technology in state governments is significant as it aligns with broader goals of modernization and improved cybersecurity. The AWS report indicates that 81 percent of global respondents believe their primary cloud provider's security capabilities surpass their own teams, and 51 percent view public cloud as better suited for regulatory compliance compared to on-premises systems. However, cybersecurity and privacy remain barriers, with 40 percent of respondents citing these alongside integration challenges and unpredictable costs. This underscores the need for robust governance and staff training to mitigate operational errors and configuration issues, which are common causes of breaches.
