A new research report by Heatmap News, titled 'Communicating about Climate and Clean Energy in an Age of Affordability,' indicates that U.S. voters are largely unconvinced by claims of cost savings associated with clean energy. The study, based on a three-phase
analysis of over 5,000 registered voters, found that while the promise of lower bills is the most compelling argument for clean energy, many voters do not believe these savings are real. This skepticism stems from their primary exposure to clean energy through costly consumer technologies like rooftop solar systems or electric vehicles, rather than the reduced costs of utility-scale solar and wind power. The report segments the electorate into 'Persuaded' (42%), 'Persuadables' (31%), and 'Skeptics' (22%), highlighting that all groups, particularly 'Persuadables' and 'Skeptics,' distrust institutional messengers regarding clean energy's affordability. Furthermore, 55% of voters believe solar and wind are only cost-competitive due to subsidies, and 57% feel advocates exaggerate their affordability.
