The family of World War II veteran Army Rifleman James R. Bennett has received his lost Purple Heart medal, 35 years after his death. Bennett, who was wounded twice in 1944 while serving in France and Germany, posthumously received the medal on November
10. The medal was presented to Bennett's niece, Patty Knies, by Illinois State Treasurer Michael Frerichs during a Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) ceremony in Oak Lawn, Illinois. This event marks the 17th lost medal returned by Frerichs as part of Operation Purple Heart, a program launched in 2021 to return medals to their rightful owners. Bennett's Purple Heart was discovered in a bank safe deposit box and surrendered to the Illinois State Treasurer's Office as unclaimed property in 2022.
