Dr. Frederick Flener, a respected professor of Mathematics Education at Northeastern Illinois University, has passed away at the age of 85. He died on May 25, 2026, following a fall and subsequent stroke in Orange County, California. Dr. Flener was known
for his contributions to mathematics education and his involvement in creating math contest problems for the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics (ICTM). He is survived by his wife, Patty, four children, and 15 grandchildren. A celebration of his life is scheduled for July 5 at the Park Ridge Community Church.
