What's Happening?
Rob Lloyd, the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Seattle, is set to leave his position at the end of the month to join the Center for Digital Government (CDG) as its executive director. Lloyd has had a distinguished career in public-sector IT leadership,
having served in various roles across Arizona, Oregon, and California before his tenure in Seattle. At CDG, a division of e.Republic, Lloyd will oversee research and advisory programs, including the Digital Communities initiative and the Center for Public Sector AI. His departure from Seattle marks the end of a period focused on improving the city's IT systems and setting a foundation for future investments. Tracye Cantrell, Seattle's Assistant CTO, will serve as interim CTO following Lloyd's departure.
Why It's Important?
Lloyd's move to CDG is significant as it highlights the ongoing evolution and challenges in public-sector technology. His leadership at CDG could influence how state and local governments address issues such as affordability and the integration of artificial intelligence. Lloyd's experience in diverse IT environments equips him to guide CDG in shaping technology strategies that can impact government operations on a broader scale. This transition also underscores the importance of strategic IT leadership in public service, as cities like Seattle continue to align technology with departmental missions to enhance municipal services.
What's Next?
As Lloyd transitions to his new role, Seattle will undergo a leadership change with Tracye Cantrell stepping in as interim CTO. The city will need to maintain momentum on ongoing projects, such as the new compensation classification system and cable franchise extension. The recruitment process for a permanent CTO is yet to be announced, but the city will likely focus on finding a leader who can continue the strategic IT initiatives Lloyd championed. Meanwhile, Lloyd's work at CDG will likely involve addressing the dynamic challenges facing public-sector technology, potentially influencing policy and practice across the nation.
