What's Happening?
Gresham Ford hosted the kickoff celebration for SnowCap Community Services’ 2026 Fill-A-Bag Campaign, a two-month fundraising initiative aimed at supporting the nonprofit food pantry. The event, held on Friday morning, November 6, was organized by the Gresham Area
Chamber of Commerce and featured costumes, contests, pancakes, and significant community support for individuals facing food insecurity. Bess Wills, co-owner of Gresham Ford, emphasized the campaign's message: “Food says you matter and are not alone. A bag of groceries provides a little breathing room for so many families.” The Fill-A-Bag campaign is structured around businesses, with major sponsors including Gresham Ford, Riverview Bank, and The Outlook, who create events and activities throughout November and December to generate funds and donations for SnowCap. Gresham Ford, for instance, has a donation barrel and pledges to donate an additional $100 to SnowCap each time the barrel is filled. The Mt. Hood Mustangs and Fords Club also contributed $500 and will host their annual Fill-A-Bag Food Drive on December 5.
Why It's Important?
This community-driven fundraising effort is crucial for addressing food insecurity in Gresham and surrounding areas, including Rockwood, East Portland, Troutdale, Fairview, Wood Village, the Columbia River Gorge, and unincorporated Multnomah County. SnowCap Community Services, founded in 1967, operates the largest nonprofit food bank in Oregon, alongside a clothing closet, community garden, and holiday meal programs. The Fill-A-Bag Campaign's success directly impacts the ability of SnowCap to provide essential resources to families struggling to make ends meet. The involvement of local businesses, such as Gresham Ford, Riverview Bank, and The Outlook, demonstrates a strong commitment to corporate social responsibility and community welfare. This collaborative model not only raises significant funds and donations but also fosters a sense of community solidarity, highlighting how local partnerships can effectively tackle pressing social issues like hunger. The campaign's goal-oriented approach, building on a successful 2025 fundraiser that raised over $27,000 and collected thousands of pounds of food and clothing, underscores its vital role in the region's social safety net.
What's Next?
The 2026 Fill-A-Bag Campaign will continue throughout November and December, with various family-friendly events and activities planned by participating businesses. Community members can contribute by donating items at designated barrels, such as the one at Gresham Ford, or by participating in specific events like the Mt. Hood Mustangs and Fords Club's food drive on December 5. SnowCap Community Services will utilize the collected funds and donations to stock its food pantry and support its various programs, ensuring that individuals and families in need receive assistance during the holiday season and beyond. The campaign's success will be measured by its ability to surpass previous fundraising and donation totals, further strengthening SnowCap's capacity to serve the community. The ongoing engagement of local businesses and community groups will be key to achieving these goals and sustaining support for the nonprofit's critical services.
Beyond the Headlines
The Fill-A-Bag Campaign exemplifies a localized response to broader economic challenges that contribute to food insecurity. While national policies address poverty and hunger, community-level initiatives like SnowCap's campaign provide immediate and tangible relief, often filling gaps left by larger programs. The campaign's emphasis on business involvement also highlights the potential for the private sector to play a significant role in social welfare, moving beyond traditional philanthropy to integrate community support into their operational models. This approach can foster stronger local economies by improving the well-being of residents, which in turn can lead to a more stable workforce and consumer base. The success of such initiatives can also serve as a model for other communities seeking sustainable ways to address social needs through collaborative efforts between nonprofits, businesses, and local residents, demonstrating the power of collective action in building resilient communities.
