What's Happening?
A recent report by EIT Food has revealed a significant gap between the intention and behavior of European consumers regarding sustainable eating. The study, which surveyed over 19,000 individuals across 18 European countries, found that while health remains
a primary driver for dietary changes, financial and structural barriers hinder the adoption of sustainable diets. Interest in sustainable eating has declined from 76% in 2021 to 69% in 2025, with only half of the respondents believing they maintain a sustainable diet. The report highlights that younger consumers are more inclined to adopt sustainable practices, such as consuming organic foods and products from regenerative agriculture. However, the overall shift towards sustainable eating is limited by affordability and entrenched habits.
Why It's Important?
The findings underscore the challenges faced by consumers in aligning their dietary habits with sustainability goals. As financial pressures mount, the importance of sustainable food choices is diminishing, posing a threat to environmental and health objectives. The report calls for more pragmatic actions from industry and policymakers to make healthy and sustainable options more accessible and affordable. This is crucial for achieving meaningful dietary changes and addressing the environmental impact of food consumption. The study highlights the need for solutions that consider real-world constraints, emphasizing the role of taste and affordability in driving food choices.
What's Next?
EIT Food advocates for diversified and pragmatic actions to bridge the gap between consumer intentions and behaviors. This includes creating accessible and convenient healthy products, supporting affordability through policy measures, and connecting sustainability to personal health benefits. The report suggests that without addressing affordability and routine constraints, consumer motivation alone will not lead to large-scale dietary transformation. Policymakers and industry leaders are urged to develop strategies that align with consumers' real-world challenges to promote sustainable eating habits.
