What's Happening?
A new program has been introduced by the Forestry Commission in England to help forestry professionals achieve a recognized qualification as Forestry Works Managers (FWM). This initiative allows participants to demonstrate their competence and gain formal
recognition of their skills through an experienced worker route. Participants will compile evidence of their competence and submit it via the Institute of Chartered Foresters' (ICF) Silvestor digital platform. The program is supported by the Institute of Chartered Foresters and the Forest Industry Safety Accord (FISA). Ten eligible applicants will have their assessment fully funded by the Forestry Commission, with micro businesses being prioritized. The application window closes on August 7, 2026.
Why It's Important?
This program is significant as it addresses the gap in formal qualifications for many forestry professionals who are already performing the role of Forestry Works Managers without official recognition. By providing a structured pathway to qualification, the initiative aims to professionalize the sector, enhance safety standards, and build a more skilled workforce. This could lead to improved management of forestry operations and potentially increase job opportunities within the sector. The program also reflects a broader trend towards formalizing skills and competencies in various industries, which can lead to higher standards and better outcomes for both workers and the environment.
What's Next?
The next steps involve the selection of ten applicants who will receive funding for their assessments. Participants will continue to compile and submit evidence of their skills, with assessments conducted by Open Awards. Successful candidates will gain access to a streamlined application for ICF Technical membership. The program's impact will likely be evaluated based on feedback from participants and the overall improvement in safety and skill levels within the forestry sector. The initiative may also inspire similar programs in other regions or sectors, further promoting the professionalization of skilled trades.
