What's Happening?
Minister for Agriculture and Livestock Development, Dr. Madan Pariyar, has emphasized the importance of improving soil quality and its conservation. In a message marking the 12th World Soil Day, he highlighted
the adverse effects of intensive farming and the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides on soil properties. Minister Pariyar noted that soil is crucial for agricultural production and ecological balance. He pointed out that unplanned urbanization and industrialization have reduced soil's water absorption capacity and increased pollution, posing challenges to environmental balance. The minister advocated for mobile soil camps and awareness programs to promote sustainable farming and proper pesticide use, coordinated across all government tiers.
Why It's Important?
The emphasis on soil quality and conservation is vital for sustainable agriculture and environmental health. Soil degradation due to chemical use and urbanization threatens agricultural productivity and ecological balance. By promoting soil health, the initiatives aim to enhance food security and environmental sustainability. Improved soil management can lead to better crop yields and reduced environmental impact, benefiting farmers and urban communities alike. The focus on soil conservation aligns with global efforts to combat climate change and preserve natural resources, highlighting the interconnectedness of rural and urban ecosystems.
