Two researchers from Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) have been awarded ERC Starting Grants, each receiving 1.5 million euros. Immunologist Professor Dr. Ricardo Grieshaber-Bouyer will investigate the role of neutrophils in inflammatory
autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis, aiming to improve immune therapies. Vascular surgeon PD Dr. Dr. Angelos Karlas is developing a robot-assisted, AI-based tool to analyze microcirculation and oxygen supply in tissues to better understand and predict chronic ulcers in type 2 diabetes patients. These grants are part of the European Research Council (ERC) funding under the EU research framework program 'Horizon Europe,' supporting groundbreaking, visionary, and risky projects in basic research for early career researchers transitioning to academic independence.

PD Dr. Dr. Karlas will focus on building and validating his robot and AI-assisted platform, ARETEOS, to map blood supply and oxygen kinetics in soft tissue. The long-term vision for Karlas's project is to develop a system akin to CT or MRI for widespread screening of diabetes complications, potentially even before ulcers manifest. Both researchers aim to translate their basic research findings into clinical applications, with the potential for new therapeutic approaches and diagnostic tools to emerge from their work.
