What's Happening?
The City of Goodyear, Arizona, has issued a call for artists to participate in a two-part live mural experience celebrating Black history, culture, music, and community. This initiative is part of the city's Jazz in the Park event in February 2027 and its
Juneteenth Family Day celebration on June 19, 2027. Selected artists will design and paint temporary murals inspired by the theme 'Retro – Good Times, Music & Dance,' focusing on the joy, energy, and cultural influence of music and dance through a retro lens. Artists will work on their murals during the week leading up to Jazz in the Park, with a live painting component during the event on February 20, 2027. The completed murals will then be preserved and displayed again at Goodyear High School for the Juneteenth Family Day celebration.
Why It's Important?
This artistic initiative by the City of Goodyear is significant as it uses public art to commemorate and celebrate Black history and culture, aligning with both Black History Month and Juneteenth. By engaging artists and the community in a creative process, the project fosters cultural understanding and appreciation. The theme 'Retro – Good Times, Music & Dance' aims to highlight the positive and influential aspects of Black cultural heritage, promoting joy, resilience, and community spirit. This type of public engagement through art can strengthen community bonds, provide educational opportunities about historical events like Juneteenth, and offer a platform for artistic expression that reflects the diverse cultural fabric of Goodyear. It also demonstrates a municipal commitment to recognizing and celebrating significant cultural observances.
What's Next?
Artists interested in participating in the Juneteenth Mural Experience must submit their applications by January 4, 2027. Finalists will be notified by January 8, 2027, followed by a project kick-off meeting and concept approval process. Artists will work on their murals in February 2027, leading up to the Jazz in the Park event. After the initial display, the murals will be preserved, and artists may be asked to perform minor touch-ups before their re-exhibition at Goodyear High School on June 19, 2027, for the Juneteenth Family Day. The city plans for artists to attend the Juneteenth event to engage with attendees and discuss their artwork, ensuring continued community interaction and educational outreach.
Beyond the Headlines
The City of Goodyear's mural project offers a deeper exploration into how communities can leverage art as a tool for historical commemoration and cultural dialogue. By commissioning temporary murals, the city creates accessible public art that can reach a broad audience, potentially sparking conversations about Black history, the significance of Juneteenth, and the enduring impact of Black culture on American society. The 'Retro' theme encourages a celebratory and positive reflection, moving beyond purely historical narratives to embrace the vibrant contributions of Black artists and cultural movements.
