What's Happening?
Several prominent landmarks across South Dakota are scheduled to light up in teal on November 2 as part of the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America’s (AFA) annual 'Light the World in Teal' campaign. This initiative aims to raise awareness and demonstrate
support for individuals affected by Alzheimer’s disease. Participating locations in Rapid City include Main Street Square and Holiday Hill Estates. Other notable sites across the state joining the campaign are The World’s Only Corn Palace in Mitchell, Falls Park in Sioux Falls, and Walnut Street in Yankton. These South Dakota landmarks will join over 1,750 locations globally in this unified effort. Teal is the designated awareness color for the AFA, chosen to enhance the visibility of the disease and encourage greater understanding and support.
Why It's Important?
The 'Light the World in Teal' campaign is crucial for increasing public awareness about Alzheimer’s disease, a condition affecting millions of Americans, including approximately 16,000 South Dakota residents. With projections from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicating that this number could double by 2060, raising visibility is paramount. This initiative helps destigmatize the disease, encourages early diagnosis, and promotes support for patients and their caregivers. By illuminating iconic landmarks, the campaign draws widespread attention, fostering community engagement and potentially driving increased funding for research and support services. It also provides a platform for individuals to show solidarity and educate themselves and others about the challenges posed by Alzheimer's.
What's Next?
On November 2, the designated South Dakota landmarks will be illuminated in teal, serving as visual reminders of the ongoing fight against Alzheimer's disease. Community members are encouraged to participate by wearing teal, displaying the color in their homes or workplaces, and sharing information about Alzheimer’s on social media to amplify the message. For those seeking more information or support services, the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America provides resources through its website, alzfdn.org, and a dedicated helpline at 866-232-8484. The campaign aims to sustain momentum beyond the lighting event, fostering continued dialogue and support for those impacted by the disease.
Beyond the Headlines
The 'Light the World in Teal' campaign highlights the growing public health crisis posed by Alzheimer's disease and the critical need for collective action. Beyond the visual spectacle, such awareness campaigns often serve as catalysts for broader societal changes, including increased advocacy for healthcare policies, improved access to care, and enhanced research efforts. The global participation in this campaign underscores the universal impact of neurodegenerative diseases and the shared human experience of caring for affected loved ones. It also implicitly calls for a deeper understanding of brain health, preventative measures, and the ethical considerations surrounding long-term care for an aging population. The symbolic use of color transforms public spaces into platforms for vital health discussions.
