The United States Postal Service (USPS) has released a new stamp to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. A dedication ceremony for the stamp took place at Custom House Pier in New London, CT. Marc McCrery, USPS customer experience
vice president, stated that U.S. postage stamps celebrate the best of America and expressed pride in featuring the academy. Rear Adm. Gregory C. Rothrock, U.S. Coast Guard Academy superintendent, highlighted the significance of this recognition for the Coast Guard's role in national security and its commitment to developing future officers. The academy, established on July 31, 1876, as the Revenue Cutter School of Instruction, has evolved significantly, moving to its current 103-acre campus in New London in 1932 and beginning to accept women in 1976. Today, it educates approximately 1,070 cadets across 10 majors, preparing them for leadership roles in the U.S. Coast Guard. The stamp art features photographs of the barque Eagle, the academy's primary training vessel, and the USCGC Bertholf, a Legend-class national security cutter. Antonio Alcalá, a USPS art director, designed the stamp, using photos by Coast Guard Petty Officer 2nd Class Matthew Thieme and Coast Guard Petty Officer 1st Class Steven Strohmaier.
