What's Happening?
Medical and dental students at the University of Dundee organized an interprofessional education event to address communication barriers in healthcare for patients with limited English proficiency. The
event, titled 'Beyond language: ensuring every patient is heard,' aimed to raise awareness of language as a determinant of health and its impact on patient safety. The workshop included immersive activities to simulate the challenges faced by patients with limited English, emphasizing the importance of interpreters and ESOL support.
Why It's Important?
Language barriers in healthcare can lead to poorer outcomes and increased patient safety concerns. By raising awareness and providing training on effective communication strategies, healthcare professionals can improve patient care and reduce inequalities. The event highlights the need for structured teaching on consulting with interpreters, which is often lacking in medical education. Addressing these gaps can lead to more equitable healthcare delivery and better patient experiences.
