What's Happening?
Sergio Perez has participated in the first in-person, on-track test for Cadillac's Formula 1 team at the Imola Circuit, driving a 2023 Ferrari SF-23. This marks Perez's return to an F1 car since his departure
from Red Bull at the end of the 2024 season. The test is a significant step for Cadillac as it prepares for its debut season in Formula 1 next year. The team has been using simulators for car development and operational simulations during this year's Grand Prix events. Cadillac has struck a deal with Ferrari to use one of its older cars for testing, as the team does not yet have its own machinery. Perez's new teammate, Valtteri Bottas, is expected to join testing later in the year.
Why It's Important?
Cadillac's entry into Formula 1 represents a major expansion for the American manufacturer into the global motorsport arena. This move could increase competition within the sport and bring new technological advancements. For Perez, this test is an opportunity to integrate with the team and contribute to the development of the car. The partnership with Ferrari for power units until Cadillac develops its own engines highlights the strategic alliances necessary for new teams entering F1. The successful integration of Cadillac into F1 could influence other American companies to consider similar ventures, potentially reshaping the sport's landscape.
What's Next?
Cadillac's first official test will occur at the end of January, with all 11 teams running their new cars for the first time. Two additional tests will follow before the season's first race in Australia in March. The team will continue to develop its operations and car performance, aiming to be competitive in its debut season. Perez's involvement will be crucial in refining the car's setup and ensuring the team is ready for the challenges of the F1 grid.
