What's Happening?
The Lobito Atlantic Railway (LAR) has resumed operations, receiving its first copper shipment from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) after repairing flood-damaged sections of the corridor. The railway, which connects the port of Lobito to Huambo,
was closed for two months due to severe flooding. Emergency repairs have restored this critical export route for central African minerals. LAR maintained cargo flows during the disruption by transferring freight between trains and trucks on either side of the damaged track.
Why It's Important?
The reopening of the Lobito railway is crucial for the export of copper and cobalt from the DRC, which are vital for global industries, including electronics and renewable energy. The railway forms part of efforts to develop transport links for critical minerals, supported by Western interests. The restoration of this route ensures the continued flow of these minerals to international markets, which is essential for maintaining supply chains and supporting economic growth in the region.
