Rivian has agreed to a $250 million settlement to resolve a class-action lawsuit filed by shareholders following a significant price increase on its R1 pickup truck and SUV in 2022. The lawsuit accused Rivian of making misleading statements in its regulatory
filings before its 2021 IPO regarding the costs of producing the R1 vehicles. Despite agreeing to the settlement, Rivian denies any wrongdoing. The settlement awaits approval from a judge in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. If approved, Rivian plans to cover $67 million of the settlement through its directors’ and officers’ liability insurance, with the remaining $183 million coming from its cash reserves. The company is currently preparing to launch its second-generation EV, the R2 SUV, in 2026, which is expected to be more affordable and produced in larger quantities.
