Researchers from the University of Cambridge and the University of Copenhagen have mathematically proven that a perfectly fair election system is impossible. Their study, published in the Annals of Operations Research, reveals that no voting method can
simultaneously ensure local victories translate into local seats, national seat totals accurately reflect overall vote shares, and the size of parliament remains fixed. This conclusion arises from examining proportional representation and first-past-the-post systems, highlighting inherent compromises in electoral systems. The study was inspired by Denmark's 2022 election, where the left bloc won despite receiving fewer votes than the right bloc, showcasing the limitations of proportional representation. The researchers propose an alternative method, 'geographically ranked guaranteed proportionality,' which ensures proportionality but may weaken regional representation.
