What's Happening?
The Texas Education Agency (TEA) has partnered with the College Board to provide a discounted rate for the SAT School Day for Texas public school students. This initiative aims to make college preparatory assessments more accessible, with the TEA offering
reimbursement for the SAT taken during a student's junior or senior year. The digital SAT Suite of Assessments aligns with the Texas Career Readiness Standards (CCRS) and Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). Students in Texas are already familiar with the SAT, as many take the PSAT/NMSQT during their sophomore or junior year. They can access free, full-length practice tests through Bluebook and Official SAT Prep on Khan Academy. All public and private colleges and universities in Texas accept the SAT for admission. The SAT School Day will be delivered digitally during fall (October 1–31, 2026) and spring (March 1–April 30, 2027) testing windows, allowing schools flexibility in administration.
Why It's Important?
This partnership is significant for promoting college access and readiness among Texas public school students, particularly those from low-income backgrounds. By offering a discounted SAT and reimbursement, the TEA and College Board are reducing financial barriers that might prevent students from taking the test. This initiative cultivates a college-going culture by making the SAT more readily available within schools, increasing the likelihood of students taking the exam and pursuing higher education. Low-income students also benefit from unlimited free score reports and waived application fees at participating colleges. The alignment of the digital SAT with Texas's educational standards ensures that the assessment is relevant to the curriculum and helps students connect their skills to future coursework and career pathways. The new Science Practices & Foundations score further enhances the SAT's utility by reflecting students' analytical and quantitative skills crucial for STEM fields.
What's Next?
Schools and districts can order SAT School Day for the 2026–27 school year through the SAT Suite Ordering and Registration (SSOR) system. Ordering for the 2026–27 school year opened at the end of April. Test coordinators will use registration tools in SSOR starting in early September to submit student information for test packages and accommodations. The TEA will arrange payment with districts in the spring following the assessment, once all student data is received. Webinars and training modules will be provided to SAT coordinators by the College Board to assist with implementation. Students with disabilities requiring accommodations must be approved by Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD), and English learners will have access to supports such as bilingual dictionaries and extended time. The continuous improvement of outcomes will be tracked through integrated data across the SAT Suite, accessible via the K–12 score reporting portal.
Beyond the Headlines
This initiative underscores a broader trend in education to integrate standardized testing more seamlessly into the school environment, aiming to reduce external pressures and costs for students and families. By making the SAT available during the school day and offering financial support, the program addresses equity concerns, ensuring that all students, regardless of their socioeconomic status, have an equal opportunity to demonstrate their college readiness. The emphasis on aligning the digital SAT with state-specific career readiness and essential knowledge standards reflects a move towards more relevant and integrated assessment tools that can better inform students' academic and career trajectories. The partnership also highlights the evolving role of educational technology, with digital assessments and online practice resources like Khan Academy becoming central to test preparation and administration.
