What's Happening?
Indonesia is set to significantly increase its cobalt production, with output expected to grow by 21.2% in 2026, reaching 59,800 tonnes. This growth is driven by new projects and the expansion of existing facilities, such as the Pomalaa and Morowali projects,
and the ongoing ramp-up of the Huafei Cobalt-Nickel Project. The country's rise as a major cobalt producer is attributed to strategic investments in high-pressure acid leach (HPAL) facilities and a government push to develop a domestic supply chain for electric vehicles. The export ban on raw nickel in 2020 has also attracted substantial foreign investment, particularly from Chinese companies.
Why It's Important?
Indonesia's increasing cobalt production is crucial for the global electric vehicle (EV) industry, as cobalt is a key component in EV batteries. The country's strategic investments and partnerships with international companies position it as a significant player in the global cobalt market. This development supports the global transition to renewable energy and electric transportation, reducing reliance on fossil fuels. Additionally, Indonesia's growth in cobalt production could influence global market dynamics, potentially affecting cobalt prices and supply chains.
