Astrophotographer Terry Hancock has captured a breathtaking image of the Elephant Trunk Nebula, a star-forming region located 2,400 light-years away in the constellation Cepheus. Known as IC 1396, this
emission nebula is a vast cloud of gas and dust that emits light after being ionized by ultraviolet radiation from young stars within it. The nebula features a 20 light-year-long column of interstellar dust and gas, which gives it its evocative nickname. Hancock used a 180 mm Newtonian reflector and specialized astronomy filters to isolate specific wavelengths of light, capturing the nebula's intricate structure and vibrant colors over 114 hours.
