Mary E. Tillman Self, a dedicated educator and community member, passed away on December 24, 2025, at her home in Newport News, Virginia. Born in Wadesboro, North Carolina, Mary was the third of five children.
She pursued a career in education, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from Shaw University and a Master of Arts in Special Education from Virginia State University. Her teaching career spanned over four decades, including positions in Surry County, Dinwiddie County, and Newport News, as well as a stint at the Department of Defense Tehran American School. Even after retiring in 2005, Mary continued to tutor children, demonstrating her lifelong commitment to education. Beyond her professional life, Mary was an active member of her church community, serving in various roles and participating in the Amazing Grace Singers. Her memorial service is scheduled for January 17, 2026, at New Beech Grove Baptist Church.
