What's Happening?
Deerfield Public Schools District 109 is progressing with plans to construct a new Walden Elementary School, marking the district's first new school build since the late 1960s. The new facility will be an 88,000 square-foot, two-story building located
just north of the existing school. It will feature 26 classrooms, an art room, two music rooms, a gymnasium, a multi-purpose room, a cafeteria with a stage, a library, a teacher's lounge, administrative offices, resource rooms, and bathrooms. The project is part of a larger multi-million-dollar rehabilitation effort funded by a $90 million referendum, which will cover about 40% of the total costs. The existing Walden school will remain operational during construction, which is set to begin in late winter or spring 2027. Once completed, the old Walden building will temporarily house Kipling Elementary School during its renovation.
Why It's Important?
The construction of the new Walden Elementary School is significant as it represents a major investment in educational infrastructure within Deerfield Public Schools District 109. This project is part of a broader initiative to upgrade and modernize school facilities, which is crucial for providing a conducive learning environment. The use of a $90 million referendum to fund a portion of the project underscores the community's commitment to education. Additionally, the inclusion of modern amenities and sustainable technologies, such as a geothermal heating and cooling system, highlights a focus on innovation and sustainability in school design. This development is expected to enhance educational outcomes and community engagement.
What's Next?
The Deerfield Plan Commission will continue its public hearing on the new Walden Elementary School plans on August 13, as they review extensive documentation related to the project. The district is also planning an open house event on August 5 to inform the community about the upcoming changes. Following the completion of the new Walden building, the old structure will serve as a temporary site for Kipling Elementary School during its renovation. The district's plans for Wilmot Elementary School, which is also slated for a new building, will be presented to the Plan Commission in late September.
