What's Happening?
Secretary of State Gregg M. Amore, who chairs the Rhode Island Semiquincentennial 250th Commission (RI250), has announced the release of the 2026 Semiquincentennial commemorative holiday ornament. This ornament specifically honors Rhode Island's historic
Act of Renunciation, which distinguished it as the first American colony to renounce allegiance to King George III. The 2026 limited-edition ornament commemorates the 250th anniversary of this Act, adopted by the Rhode Island General Assembly on May 4, 1776. The Act removed the King's authority from official oaths and legal documents, formally asserting Rhode Island's intention to govern itself as a free and independent colony. The ornament features the historic Act alongside the Old State House in Providence, where the measure was approved. Additionally, the RI250 Commission has released a special miniature commemorative set featuring all five holiday ornaments released since 2022, reflecting Rhode Island's contributions to the American story, including designs honoring the RI250 Commission, the Burning of the Gaspee, the Act of Renunciation, Rhode Island's legacy as the birthplace of religious freedom, and the First Rhode Island Regiment.
Why It's Important?
The release of this commemorative ornament and set is important as it highlights Rhode Island's pivotal role in the American Revolution and its early commitment to independence. By celebrating the Act of Renunciation, the state reinforces its historical identity as a pioneer in self-governance and a foundational contributor to the nation's ideals. This initiative serves to educate the public about significant historical events and figures, fostering a deeper appreciation for the state's heritage. The collection also provides a tangible connection to the past, allowing residents and visitors to engage with the semiquincentennial commemoration. The inclusion of the ornament in the Semiquincentennial Time Capsule at the US Capitol further underscores the national recognition of Rhode Island's historical significance, ensuring its legacy is preserved for future generations.
What's Next?
As the nation's 250th anniversary year approaches its conclusion, the RI250 Commission is preparing to sunset. The 2026 commemorative ornament and the miniature commemorative set are currently available for purchase through the Rhode Island State House Gift Shop. The 2026 ornament is priced at $28, and the commemorative set is available for $49. These items are produced locally in Lincoln, Rhode Island, by Beacon Designs by ChemArt in collaboration with the Commission. The Commission, established in 2021 by the General Assembly, will continue its work to coordinate activities and initiatives commemorating the nation's 250th anniversary in 2026, collaborating with communities and partners across the state to honor Rhode Island's role in the American Revolution and its contributions to the nation's founding ideals.
Beyond the Headlines
The commemoration of historical events like the Act of Renunciation through items such as holiday ornaments serves a broader cultural purpose beyond mere remembrance. It helps to solidify collective memory and national identity, particularly in an era where historical understanding can be fragmented. By emphasizing Rhode Island's early assertion of independence, the initiative subtly reinforces themes of self-determination and democratic principles. The local production of these ornaments also supports local businesses and craftsmanship, intertwining historical celebration with economic benefit. Furthermore, the act of sealing an ornament in a time capsule for future generations speaks to a long-term vision of historical continuity and the enduring relevance of these foundational moments in American history.
