What's Happening?
Maimonides Health announced that Maimonides Medical Center has earned eight national specialty care awards from Healthgrades. These recognitions include five Specialty Excellence Awards, placing the hospital among the top 5% nationwide for overall orthopedic
services, spine surgery, and outpatient prostate care. Additionally, it is in the top 15% nationally for stroke treatment and overall pulmonary care services. This marks the first time the hospital has received a Specialty Excellence Award for Stroke Care. For the third consecutive year, Maimonides was named one of America’s 50 Best Hospitals for Outpatient Prostate Care (2025-2027). It also achieved its sixth year as one of America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Orthopedic Surgery (2022-2027) and its second year as one of America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Spine Surgery (2026-2027). In New York State, Maimonides was ranked #2 for orthopedic surgery and #3 for spine surgery. The hospital also secured 10 Five-Star Ratings for outstanding performance in various treatments, including Heart Failure Treatment, Hip Fracture Treatment, Spinal Fusion Surgery, Stroke Treatment, and Pneumonia Treatment.
Why It's Important?
These awards from Healthgrades are significant because they are based on objective clinical outcomes, specifically risk-adjusted mortality and complication rates, rather than surveys or reputation. This methodology provides a transparent and reliable measure of hospital performance, directly impacting patient health trajectories. For patients in Brooklyn and beyond, these recognitions signify access to high-quality, specialized care, potentially leading to better health outcomes and reduced complications. The consistent recognition in areas like orthopedics, spine surgery, and prostate care highlights Maimonides Medical Center's sustained commitment to excellence. The medical advisor at Healthgrades, Alana Biggers, MD, MPH, emphasized that choosing a hospital excelling in a given procedure can transform a patient’s health trajectory. The Healthgrades 2027 analysis indicated that if all hospitals performed at the level of five-star rated facilities, 227,229 lives could have been saved and 158,138 complications avoided during the 2023-2025 study period, underscoring the critical importance of such distinctions.
What's Next?
Maimonides Health plans to continue its progress in expanding care in key areas, including an updated cardiac catheterization lab and ongoing emergency department expansions at Maimonides Medical Center. Ken Gibbs, President and CEO of Maimonides Health, stated their commitment to expanding access to essential care for Brooklynites and raising the bar for healthcare quality. The hospital's clinical teams and leaders are expected to maintain their dedication to positive outcomes, building on the expertise and commitment to excellence highlighted by these Healthgrades honors. The Comprehensive Stroke Center team, in particular, will likely continue its quality improvement efforts following its new stroke care recognition. Patients and community members can utilize Healthgrades’ Specialty Excellence Patient Advocate Center to learn more about how top-performing hospitals are identified, which may influence their healthcare decisions and encourage other institutions to strive for similar levels of clinical quality.
Beyond the Headlines
The recognition of Maimonides Medical Center by Healthgrades extends beyond mere accolades, reflecting a broader trend towards data-driven accountability and transparency in healthcare. By focusing on objective clinical outcomes, Healthgrades provides a crucial mechanism for patients to make informed decisions, shifting the emphasis from marketing and reputation to measurable performance. This approach fosters a competitive environment among healthcare providers, incentivizing continuous quality improvement and patient safety initiatives. The impact of such ratings can influence healthcare policy, resource allocation, and even medical training, as institutions strive to meet and exceed these benchmarks. Furthermore, the emphasis on specific specialties like orthopedics, spine surgery, and stroke care highlights the increasing specialization within medicine and the importance of centers of excellence for complex procedures. This trend ultimately benefits the public by driving higher standards of care and potentially reducing healthcare disparities through the dissemination of best practices.
