Aurora Health Care is developing a nearly $50 million 'health and wellness hub' named 'The Beacon' in Milwaukee's Near West Side. This new center will occupy the former Wisconsin Avenue School, which closed in 2007. Plans for 'The Beacon' were initially
announced last year, with community leaders recently providing more details on its programming and partnerships. The hub aims to offer a wide range of services, including Milwaukee's first Community Smiles Dental clinic, housing stability services from Guest House of Milwaukee, and no-cost legal support and personalized care navigation through a partnership with Legal Action of Wisconsin. Additionally, the center will provide free, community-based programs to help residents prevent and manage chronic conditions like hypertension and diabetes, offer services supporting healthy aging, and provide prenatal education, doula support, and postpartum resources for mothers and families. The facility will also feature a garden, library, and various gathering spaces, while maintaining the historic integrity of the 1921 school building.
