What's Happening?
The Dominican Navy has officially incorporated a new 85-foot Near Coastal Patrol Vessel (NCPV), named ARCTURUS CG-114, into its fleet. This vessel was constructed by Metal Shark, a Louisiana-based boat builder, at their Franklin shipyard. The ARCTURUS CG-114 is part of a $54 million U.S. Navy Foreign Military Sales contract aimed at producing up to thirteen 85-foot Defiant-class patrol craft for U.S. partner nations. The vessel is designed to enhance maritime surveillance and control, combat drug trafficking, human trafficking, illegal fishing, and transnational organized crime, while also conducting search and rescue operations. The NCPV is powered by twin 1,600-horsepower Caterpillar C-32 marine diesel engines, achieving speeds over 25 knots, and is equipped for missions lasting up to six days.
Why It's Important?
The delivery of the ARCTURUS CG-114 represents a significant step in strengthening the Dominican Republic's maritime capabilities. This enhancement is crucial for regional security, as it bolsters the country's ability to monitor and protect its waters against various illegal activities. The partnership between Metal Shark and the Dominican Navy underscores the strategic importance of international defense collaborations, particularly in regions vulnerable to illicit trafficking and organized crime. The vessel's advanced capabilities will likely improve the Dominican Navy's operational effectiveness, contributing to broader regional stability and security.
What's Next?
With the ARCTURUS CG-114 now operational, the Dominican Navy is expected to increase its maritime patrols and enforcement activities. Metal Shark continues to work on additional NCPVs under the same contract, which will further enhance the naval capabilities of other U.S. partner nations. The ongoing production and delivery of these vessels will likely lead to increased cooperation and shared security initiatives among countries in the Caribbean and Central America.
