What's Happening?
Missouri Farmers Care has launched its Agriculture Education on the Move™ (Ag Moves) program in several elementary schools across Missouri, including North Shelby Elementary, Monroe City Elementary, and
Holy Rosary. The program aims to educate students about agriculture through a 10-week curriculum that covers topics such as crops, livestock, soil and water conservation, nutrition, and careers in agriculture. The lessons are STEM-focused and align with Missouri standards in science, math, social studies, and language arts. The program is delivered by FFA members, professional educators, and collegiate interns, and is provided at no cost to participating schools. Ag Moves has engaged over 12,600 elementary students in the 2024-25 school year, reaching one in six Missouri elementary students.
Why It's Important?
The Ag Moves program is significant as it fosters agricultural literacy among young students, helping them understand the importance of agriculture in their daily lives. By introducing students to the role of crops and farming, the program aims to inspire the next generation to value and support agriculture, which is a crucial part of Missouri's economy. The initiative also seeks to cultivate skills such as confidence, communication, mentorship, and leadership among students, potentially shaping future community leaders. The program is supported by various agricultural organizations and is seen as an investment in the future of Missouri's rural communities.
What's Next?
The program is expected to continue expanding its reach, with more schools participating in the Ag Moves curriculum. Missouri Farmers Care plans to maintain and grow partnerships with agricultural organizations to ensure the program's sustainability and effectiveness. As students gain insights into agriculture, they may be encouraged to pursue careers in the field, contributing to the state's agricultural economy. The program's success could lead to similar initiatives in other states, promoting agricultural education nationwide.
Beyond the Headlines
Ag Moves not only educates students about agriculture but also addresses broader issues such as food security and environmental sustainability. By teaching students about soil and water conservation, the program highlights the importance of sustainable farming practices. Additionally, the hands-on activities help students develop a deeper appreciation for the work of farmers and ranchers, fostering respect for the agricultural community. The program's emphasis on STEM education also aligns with national efforts to enhance science and technology learning in schools.
